The human senses are sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste. A sixth sense is often called intuition and in Your Reiki Treatment it is referred to as the spiritual sense.
We received a question this week that brings up a number of connected issues.
Q: Hi I just read an article about Reiki and it said that Intention is not a part of Reiki and that Reiki brings a meditative state itself and is unlike disciplines such as QiGong where a practitioner grounds him/herself first.
A: Intent is… everything.
In modern Reiki practices it is common for people to ask for distant healing and, therefore, for others to ‘send’ it. Basically, distant healing is where someone who is not present receives a Reiki treatment.
Yet, if you look at the structure of universal energy (Reiki) then distance doesn’t exist - even some quantum physicists today will tell you this (perhaps food for another blog). The term distant healing is therefore probably inappropriate but it is the commonly used terminology so we will also use it here.

Intent is the initial, directed thought that flickers across your mind - often before you are even consciously aware that you have begun the thinking process.
This directed thought sets a process in motion. It stimulates your energy to trigger an action. The action might be picking up a tea cup, talking to someone or beginning a personal healing process.
The system of Reiki however is an energetic practice. We practice meditation techniques to strengthen our inner energy to enable us to become clearer channels for energy to move through.
This Japanese practice requires practitioners to develop skill and comprehension of energetic work. In this way the system of Reiki is very different to a placebo; the practitioner’s own self-development is the key to the success of the practitioner’s work on others.
Hot hands is one of the ways that your body senses energy.
It is, however, a fallacy to say that your hands must always be hot when working energetically. Some people also feel tingling, pulsation or cold winds to name but a few sensations.
From the first moment that you make contact with your Reiki practitioner she will influence you—that is human nature. This same natural law also ensures that you will influence your practitioner.
How you influence each other and what you take to, and away from, your shared experience is something that you both have control over.
