Yin soll beispielsweise für das Weibliche, Passive, Dunkle, Kalte, Feuchte, ... stehen und Yang für das Männliche, Aktive, Helle, Warme, Trockene, ... . Ursprünglich bedeutete Yang „in der Sonne wehende Banner“ und Yin „wolkig, bedeckt“.
