Reiki and Yoga

I have learned over the last 15 years as a practitioner and teacher of yoga, meditation, and Reiki – that the forms and styles available to us are not all created equal.

I practice Anusara® yoga (a style of hatha yoga), Kriya Yoga (a meditation path), and Japanese Reiki. They all share a very important and fundamental element in common – they are spiritual practices with deep roots in a meditation tradition. Because of this, they are perfect complements to one another, and are seamlessly woven into the fabric of my life.

Animal Reiki Stories - The Power of Love

Felipe was barely 5 weeks old, had short jet-black fuzz for fur, little round eyes, a black nose, and was cute as a kitten could be. He weighed barely one pound. He was wobbly and weak when I brought him home to be fostered for the SPCA, but I was hoping that with a little cleaning up, some good food, and a warm bed, he would perk up, as they usually do. I provided all these things and went off to work.

Reiki Meditation Insights

Why is it so important to meditate if you want to do hands on healing?

Let’s first look at one of the most commonly practised Japanese Reiki meditations called hatsurei ho. Literally, hatsurei ho translates to generating a greater amount of spiritual energy - as you can see the name of the meditation says it already. By practising this meditation over and over again you begin to generate greater amounts of spiritual energy, which in turn supports your own healing and consequently the practising of hands-on healing on others as well.

Animal Reiki Stories - The Master Opossum

The evening was like any other evening. It was 10pm, and it was time to put the dogs out for one last time before going to bed. But before we can let our two dogs Molly and Daisy (Both terriers) into the backyard, we must first do a perimeter check of the yard with a flashlight to make sure we’re clear of any little critters such as skunks, raccoons or anything else that has fur and moves on four legs. I was folding laundry, so my partner Cecelia went ahead and put the dogs out for me.

Animal Reiki Stories - Happy 5th Birthday Sappho

In August, 2007, I was petting my dog, Sappho, when I felt a pancake sized lump on her right shoulder. I was a little startled but not too worried; she was a healthy three year old full of life and energy. Besides, she would have her annual check-up in a few days, and I’d ask the vet if the lump was still there. At the visit, the vet, Dr.Kennedy, at Highland Animal Hospital in Needham, Massachusetts, palpated and probed; he was concerned enough to take a few drops of blood from the lump and check it under the microscope.

Animal Reiki Stories - Rocky the Cockatoo

The weekend that I learnt Reiki 1 at Newtown (May 12 and 13 2007) I left on the Sunday feeling relaxed but still skeptical about Reiki.

I went from the Reiki course to my partners parents home to pick her up to go home.

My partner Irene’s parents have a cockatoo that lives in the house with them. For the previous 7 or more years that I had been coming to the house, Rocky (the cockatoo) would never come to me, he would only let Irene touch him and kiss him and no matter how quiet I was or held out his favourite snacks to him, he would only come within an arms length and then run away.

Animal Reiki Stories - Reiki for Blackie

In September 2007, my dog, Blackie, was constantly licking his left forearm, so I took a closer look and there was a three inch cut. I had a flashback that he had the exact same cut on the same arm the previous year, and we had taken him to a vet because it was infected, and they gave me an orange ointment to apply. I remember him shrieking when we put it on, and I was really reluctant to continue but the cut did heal. I also remember the vet saying that it was good for him to continue to lick his arm, because their saliva had healing properties. So, for this cut I allowed him to lick, and prayed for it to heal.

Animal Reiki Stories - Molly & Maude

After I had completed my Shoden level Reiki in 2004 I went to a friends house to practise my newly found skills on Marie. As I was leaving, Lucy her cat came to say goodbye. I pat her back said to Marie, “I wonder how she would go with Reiki”, so I concentrated on it and in a moment Lucy lay stretching her forelegs out in front of herself with her chin flat on the ground.
