ACCOMMODATION
Your accommodation (included in Retreat fee) is a blend of traditional Balinese & contemporary Asian styles, ranging from well appointed rooms in a handcrafted teak house to comfortable bungalows.
Superior Teak House
The Superior Teak House is a blend of traditional Balinese & contemporary Asian styles, it has well appointed large rooms plus ensuite in a handcrafted teak building.

Standard Teak House
The Standard Teak House rooms are furbished in the same style as the superior rooms, they are, however, smaller and have external amenities (toilet and shower) about 10m from the room. This is due to the design and incorporation of a beautiful recycled Teak House that we modified to build our guest accommodation. This room has a verandah and is quite comfortable with a Kingsize bed.
Budget Rice House
Bali Mountain Retreat has available a unique opportunity for those on a budget or who would simply like the idea of staying in the traditional 'Lumbung". This building was and still is used for storing 'beras' ( rice). Almost all compounds in the local village still use the lumbung to store rice, however, a few have been converted to sleeping rooms. The villagers will often sit on the platform below to share a coffee and a few stories.

Bale Gede
The largest bale, with twelve pillars, is known as a Bale Gede. This traditional Balinese building is constructed with timber posts set onto a masonry base supporting a roof of radiating beamwork. The Bale has walls of red brick, a feature that probably derived from the temple architecture of medieval east Java. The roof is always crowned with a terracotta finial. The word bale means 'pavilion', and the structure of the bale is closed to the south and east.
This is a restored old Bale Gede from the coast of Bali. This Bale is crucial to the Hindu people and their ceremonies such as the Potong Gigi (Tooth Filing Ceremony), Ngaben (Funerals) amongst many other important ceremonies.
Elderly Balinese people will sleep in these Spiritual houses when they are ill as they believe it to have healing powers. Maybe this has to do with the many ceremonies performed during its construction, the last being melaspas, the purificatory rite of completion, which personifies the house as it brings the previously 'dead' materials alive as a living being complete with feet - (the foundations), body - (the timber pillars) - and the head - (the roof).
The local Pemangku (Hindu preist) has blessed and placed an old Kris (traditional dagger) in the Bale Pura (temple), this old Kris was found in the rice fields of Gianyar and was given to Richard for his contribution to Balinese music, by I Ketut Suaradana from Gianyar who made an elaborate handle ( a carving of Rama) for it.
This bale is enclosed in glass and curtains which is traditional. It is available as budget accommodation for those who would like to experience the powers of this Bale. The amenities are about 10 meters away.

Once at the Temple, the Pemangku (Bali Hindu priest), will perform a short ceremony as a welcome to the mountain, which is a very spiritual place for the Balinese people. When attending a Temple Ceremony
1. Always wear a sarong and sash.
2. Do not walk in front of people when they are praying.
3. Do not use flash or point your camera at the priest's face!
4. Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings.
5. Women are not allowed to enter temples during their menstruation.
Traditional Balinese Dance Evening
Balinese dance is inseparable from religion. A small offering of food and flowers must precede even dances for tourists. Before performing, many dancers pray at their family shrines, appealing for holy "taksu" (inspiration) from the gods.
In this rural tradition, the people say that peace and harmony depend on protection by the gods and ancestors. Dance in this context may fulfil a number of specific functions:
- as a channel for visiting gods or demonic gods, the dancers acting as a sort of living repository. These trance dances include the Sang Hyang Dedari, with little girls in trance, and the Sang Hyang Jaran, a fire dance.
- as a welcome for visiting gods, such as the pendet, rejang and sutri dances
- as entertainment for visiting gods, such as the topeng and the wayang.
In some of these dances, the role of dancing is so important that it is actually the key to any meaning to be found in the ritual. In wayang performances, the puppeteer is often seen as the "priest" sanctifying the holy water.
